David Brooks was matching Phil’s times and sometimes faster, however an engine failure and a dropped round demoted him to second in class.

As much as I'd like that to be an accurate summary of the season, i'm sure Dave might have something to say about it. It's more the case that he was always faster than me and I only won the class due to him not doing all rounds.

Phil don't be harsh on yourself, you won the class fair and square. While I agree Dave didn't always have the best of luck, thats racing !! What you have to remember, is history will tell you that you won the class, it doesn't tell you how you did it.

I've been involved in racing for a while and seen people lose a championship in the last round due to a mechanical failure, or a decision by the officals not going their way (was that me ??) I also seen the opposite, so enjoy the win and come back next year determined to retain the class.
